Can you get pet insurance if your dog or cat already has a medical condition?
It’s a question many South African pet parents ask, especially when their furry family member has previously needed veterinary treatment.
The good news? A previous health problem doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t apply for pet insurance. But it may affect what your policy covers.
Let’s explain!
What is a pre-existing condition in pet insurance?
A pre-existing condition is an illness, injury or health problem that existed or showed symptoms before your pet’s insurance started, or during the applicable waiting period.
And here’s something important: your pet doesn’t necessarily need a formal diagnosis for a condition to be considered pre-existing.
For example, if your dog had recurring skin problems before joining a pet insurance plan, treatment relating to those symptoms may be excluded, even if the condition was only diagnosed later.
What if my pet develops an illness after taking out insurance?
This is where timing matters.
If your pet develops a new, eligible illness after the applicable waiting period, treatment may be covered under your chosen plan.
However, conditions that first show symptoms during the waiting period may be treated as pre-existing and excluded.
That’s why taking out pet insurance while your dog or cat is healthy is worth considering, rather than waiting until something goes wrong.
