Cats may be experts at keeping themselves clean, but grooming alone doesn’t protect them from fleas and ticks.
And with warmer weather bringing more time outdoors, gardens to explore and sunny spots to investigate, it’s worth checking that your cat’s flea and tick protection is up to date.
Do cats really need flea and tick protection?
Yes!
Fleas can cause itching and skin irritation, and some cats develop flea allergy dermatitis, which can result in inflamed, crusty skin and excessive scratching. Heavy flea infestations can even contribute to anaemia, particularly in kittens.
Ticks are less commonly spotted on cats because cats are such enthusiastic groomers, but they can still attach and feed. Some ticks can also transmit serious diseases.
Even indoor cats aren’t completely off the hook. Fleas can make their way into homes, while ticks can sometimes be carried indoors by people or other animals.
What are the signs of fleas on a cat?
Keep an eye out for frequent scratching or licking, irritated or crusty skin, visible fleas, or tiny dark specks known as “flea dirt” in the coat.
What are the symptoms of a tick bite in cats?
Finding a tick doesn’t automatically mean your cat will become ill. However, after a tick bite, watch for changes such as:
- Lethargy or weakness
- Loss of appetite
- Fever
- Swelling, redness or discharge around the bite
- Stiffness or swollen joints
If your cat seems unwell after a tick bite, contact your vet.

Never use a flea or tick treatment intended for dogs on your cat unless your veterinarian specifically tells you it is safe. Some ingredients used in dog products can be toxic to cats. Your vet can recommend an appropriate feline product and treatment schedule.
