Pre-Authorisation, Emergency and Non-Emergency Treatments Explained
Pet insurance policy wording and industry terminology can sometimes feel overwhelming — especially for new pet parents who simply want to do the best for their animals.
Earlier this month, an article was shared explaining common pet insurance jargon. Since then, several clients have asked for clarification on three specific terms that appear frequently in policy documentation. Because clear communication and education are important, it helps to break these terms down in simple language.
Understanding the difference between pre-authorisation, emergency care, and non-emergency treatment can help pet parents avoid delays, confusion, and unexpected costs when their pet needs veterinary care.
Pre-Authorisation Requirements
When a vet recommends a specialist consultation, MRI or CT scan, or any planned procedure, pre-authorisation must be obtained before treatment takes place.
This allows the insurer to review the proposed treatment plan and confirm whether the procedure is covered under the policy.
Pre-authorisation can take up to two working days to process, so it is best requested as soon as a veterinarian recommends specialised or planned treatment.
Emergency Treatment
Emergency treatment refers to immediate veterinary care required when a pet’s life or well-being is at serious risk.
Situations that typically qualify as emergencies include:
- Severe injuries
- Sudden illness
- Poisoning
- Any condition requiring urgent medical attention to prevent death or significant harm
Emergency care is prioritised because delaying treatment could place the pet in serious danger.
Non-Emergency Treatment
Any treatment that does not fall under emergency care is considered non-urgent and generally requires pre-authorisation before treatment can proceed.
In these cases, the veterinarian will typically need to provide:
- A cost estimate
- Updated medical history
- Details of the recommended treatment
This process helps ensure clarity for both the pet parent and the insurer before treatment begins.
Making Pet Insurance Easier to Understand
Pet insurance terminology does not need to be confusing. Understanding how pre-authorisation, emergency treatment, and non-emergency care work helps pet parents make informed decisions and navigate veterinary care more confidently.
